Obama to raise Kaine?

President Barack Obama and former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine are supposed to talk by telephone in the next day or two regarding Kaine’s potential run for Senate in 2012, the White House confirmed Wednesday.

Virginia Democrats are scrambling to find a candidate after Sen. Jim Webb’s not-entirely-unexpected announcement that he would not seek a second term. Former Sen. George Allen, who Webb defeated in 2006, already announced that he’s running to win back that seat.

Kaine, now chairman of the Democratic National Committee, expressed reservations about running for elected office again, but, having already won statewide in the deeply purple state, is feeling pressure from fellow Old Dominion Democrats to throw his hat into the ring.

Kaine is scheduled to appear at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Richmond Saturday night, and there is wide speculation that he could make an official announcement on a Senate run at the Virginia Democrats’ annual fundraiser.
