Ben Sasse: I ‘regularly consider’ leaving the GOP

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse said on Twitter Saturday he’s thought about leaving the Republican Party.

The tweet, a response to another Twitter user who claimed to have switched their affiliation from the Democratic Party to “no party” to be “part of the solution,” was short.

“yep — regularly consider it,” the tweet from the Nebraska senator reads. “(except the ‘from Dem’ part).”

The outspoken Republican has been a frequent critic of President Trump, particularly on issues of trade.

He responded to a question on whether the Republican Party is still in favor of free trade at a Washington Examiner event in May that it was unclear where the Republican Party stood on a number of policy issues.

Sasse, who also sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, also made headlines this week when he ripped lawmakers on appointing bureaucrats to make “law-like regulations” rather than legislating in his opening statements in the committee’s hearings on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
