Donald Trump’s campaign has capitalized on the latest developments surrounding Hillary Clinton’s private email server, releasing a new television ad on Thursday that ties the Democratic presidential hopeful directly to disgraced ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner.
Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, came back to haunt Democrats last week after FBI officials uncovered more than 650,000 new emails on a device of his, some of which may have originated from Clinton’s unsecured server. The discovery led FBI Director James Comey to reopen the agency’s investigation into Clinton’s handling of classified material.
“Hillary Clinton is under FBI investigation again after her emails were found on pervert Anthony Weiner’s laptop,” says the narrator of the 30-second ad, which the Trump campaign titled “Unfit.”
The voice-over continues, “Think about that. America’s most sensitive secrets unlawfully sent, received and exposed by Hillary Clinton, her staff and Anthony Weiner. Hillary cannot lead a nation while crippled by a criminal investigation.”
Trump’s latest ad is set to air in major markets across battleground states through Election Day and comes days after the Republican presidential nominee contributed $10 million to his campaign to go toward advertising.
“While Mr. Trump has spent the closing weeks of this campaign drawing huge crowds of Americans hungry for a common-sense change agent who will bring our jobs back and strengthen our borders, Crooked Hillary Clinton has been busy living in an alternate reality where her litany of email scandals and FBI investigations don’t disqualify her from running for President,” senior communications adviser Jason Miller said Thursday in a statement released by the Trump campaign.
Trump closely trails Clinton by less than 2 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics national polling average just five days before the Nov. 8 election.
