Attorney for John Conyers says congressman has ‘no plans to resign’

The attorney representing Rep. John Conyers said that the democratic congressman from Michigan has no plan to resign amid a bevy of sexual harassment allegations.

“Congressman Conyers has no plans to resign,” read the statement from Arnold Reed. “He intends to cooperate with the House should they determine further investigation is warranted.”

Reed told CNN in a phone interview that his client is taking the allegations “very seriously” and held that he is “not guilty” of allegations of sexual harassment from his staff members.

“If everybody that was facing ‘allegations’ — including the president, members of the House and Senate — resigned, we’d have a lot of unemployed people walking around,” Reed explained.

Earlier this week, multiple women came forward accusing Conyers of sexual harassment and it was revealed that, in 2015, the lawmaker settled a wrongful dismissal complaint from a former staffer who claimed she was fired over denying his sexual advances.

Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., called on Conyers to resign on Wednesday, becoming the first House Democrat to do so.
