A man has died in an apparent drowning in Laurel, officials said.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Kalif Omar Richardson of District Heights, according to Prince George’s County police officials.

Shortly before 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Prince George’s County Fire/EMS were notified of a possible drowning at a pond in an apartment complex in the 13000 block of Old Stagecoach Road. A water rescue team responded, according to Fire/EMS officials, and the county police helicopter flew above the pond to find the victim using infrared equipment and to help illuminate the scene.

About 10:20 p.m., one of the rescuers found Richardson at the bottom of the pond. He wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, officials said. The teen was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prince George’s County police will conduct a follow-up investigation.
