Virginia asks residents not to drink rainwater

While Virginia’s drinking water remains safe, state health officials are advising residents not to drink rainwater “out of an abundance of caution.”

Environmental Protection Agency monitors have detected very low levels of radiation in rainwater in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts as a result of the radiation released at nuclear facilities in Japan, and while officials haven’t detected anything in Virginia yet, the state’s health department is still asking residents to take extra precautions.

The health department will also move up routine quarterly tests that check radiation levels in the air, drinking water, vegetation and milk across the state.
