U.S. says only 14 civilians killed in 9 months of war

The U.S. military says it has been able to confirm just 14 unintended civilian deaths over a nine-month period of bombing in Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. Central Command investigated six separate incidents that occurred between July 28, 2015, and April 29, 2016 and determined that initial reports of civilian casualties were credible.

But the review did not include the latest reports of civilian deaths near Manjib, Syria, where as many as 70 people may have died in two separate strikes on July 20 and 23.

A statement from the U.S. Central Command said the U.S. and its coalition partners take “all reasonable measures to avoid non-combatant casualties,” and offered condolences to the families of the victims.

“We deeply regret the unintentional loss of life and injuries resulting from our airstrikes and express our sympathies to those affected,” the statement said.
