Senator Calls for Independent Prosecutor for Clinton Email Investigation

Yesterday, I noted that the White House’s recent comment that Hillary Clinton would not be indicted “based on what we know” raised some troubling questions. Specifically, are the Justice Department and FBI briefing the White House on the ongoing investigation? And given the consequences of the investigation, isn’t that a bit unseemly because the White House clearly has political motives to influence the investigation? Well, Senator John Cornyn of Texas is apparently unsettled by this as well:

The second-ranking Republican in the Senate is amplifying his call for the Justice Department to name a special counsel to investigate Hillary Clinton’s email server, suggesting the White House is trying to influence the FBI’s probe. I believe that Secretary Clinton has likely violated multiple criminal statues,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Monday. Cornyn said Attorney General Loretta Lynch should name a special counsel to counter the “apparent inability of the White House to resist the temptation to try to influence or at worst obstruct the current investigation.” Cornyn pointed to remarks made last year by President Obama and separate comments from White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest last month, which he argued underscores that the administration is trying to sway the FBI’s investigation.
