Glendening endorses Mfume for U.S. Senate

Former Gov. Parris Glendening, a name little invoked in Democratic circles just 3 1/2 years after he left office, endorsed ex-Congressman Kweisi Mfume in the U.S. Senate race as an “environmental activist” and “based on his effectiveness both in the U.S. Senate and as a leader.”

“I know most of the candidates, and it?s just crystal clear to me that [Mfume] is the best choice,” the former governor said at a news conference at the Annapolis City Dock. He called Mfume “a shrewd legislator” and a “fighter for all,” with a “commitment to the grit and detail” of getting legislation passed.

Mfume said, “I want to build on Parris Glendening?s record on smart growth and environmentalism.”

The campaign of Dennis Rasmussen actually mocked Glendening?s endorsement, offering its “condolences” to Mfume.
