When you can help it, it’s best not to stick a fork in an electrical socket — basic electricity 101. But kudos to Loudoun County Public Schools for going above and beyond in its energy education, named an Energy Star Partner of the Year by the Environmental Protection Agency for the second straight year.
Loudoun was one of only two school systems nationwide to get the honor — it saved more than $323,000 in electricity and natural gas costs in 2010, and 36 of its 76 schools were designated as extremely energy-efficient, among other accomplishments.
The EPA recognized more than 100 organizations, including Boeing, Colgate-Palmolive, Hanes Brands, Kohl’s, Sears and Staples.
EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe noted that school systems are becoming more energy conscious thanks to the program.
“They’re now spending money on textbooks and teachers, instead of energy bills. Teachers and textbooks are certainly where education dollars belong,” Perciasepe said.
