Dupont Circle church’s development has neighbors up in arms

If you can believe there’s still one remaining parking lot (clinging on for dear life) at Dupont Circle, you’d better go snap a picture before its gets developed.

First Baptist Church of Washington is proposing building a nine-story, 228-unit apartment building on the site — a far more lucrative use than it’s serving now.

But, as per usual when you have residences near a proposed development, the neighbors are pushing back, according to the blog Greater Greater Washington. General concerns about the lot at the corner of 17th and O streets revolve around noise and the potential for the building to be used as student housing (sort of the same thing when you think about it).

“Some residents who attended this month’s ANC meeting were vocal in their opposition to the scope of the project,” GGW says. “Fliers were distributed to meeting attendees that warned of noise, trash, and parking issues. Opponents’ main concern seems to be that this development could become a “dorm” for undergraduate students and young people.”

The developer and architect have indicated they are willing to mitigate the noise impact by making changes to the rooftop area.

The next hearing on the development is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 before the Zoning, Preservation, and Development Committee.
