Officials to discuss transportation needs as Route 1 grows in Howard

The Route 1 corridor in Howard County is expected to continue growing, and state and county officials are working to ensure transportation needs are met.

The advisory committee will meet today to discuss the U.S. 1 Corridor Improvement Strategy, an effort by the State Highway Administration to provide guidance on developing a transportation infrastructure to support the county?s vision for the area. State officials and consultants are expected to discuss recommendations for transportation improvements, said Dace Blaumanis, the county?s Route 1 project manager.

The corridor has been the focus of state and county studies for about five years. Zoning changes in 2004 lead to new land uses along Route 1, which could affect the transportation system, Blaumanis said.

The meeting will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Elkridge Library at 6540 Washington Blvd.
