Democratic Missouri Rep. Lacy Clay criticized former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams for openly lobbying to be former Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate.
“You know, at the race track, you cannot show up at the winner’s window with loser’s tickets. You haven’t won anything. You can’t show up at the winner’s window with loser’s tickets and demand anything,” Clay said on a podcast this week.
“I’ll tell you what is somewhat offensive to me, is when you are marketing yourself as a VP candidate,” Clay added. “For you to be out there marketing and putting on a PR campaign that way, I think it’s inappropriate.”
Abrams has been actively campaigning to be Biden’s running mate, although some reports have suggested that she’s not likely to be chosen.
“I would be an excellent running mate,” Abrams said earlier this month. “If I am selected, I am prepared and excited to serve.”
A report from Politico on Tuesday said that Abrams is calling Democratic power brokers, asking them to tell Biden to add her to the ticket.
Abrams has been attacking President Trump often and accused him last week of being an “illegitimate president.”
“As the national leader on voting rights and the Census, Leader Abrams conducts local and national interviews encouraging Americans to vote and be counted,” Seth Bringman, a spokesman for Abrams, told the Washington Examiner.
“When questions about her political future or willingness to serve arise, she answers those questions honestly, as she has done her entire life,” he added. “She values honesty and encourages all women and girls – particularly women and girls of color – to speak up when asked if they are qualified to lead. Leader Abrams has the deepest respect for Congressman Clay, but to cast honest answers to repeated questions as ‘lobbying’ misreads what has transpired.”
