The father of the Gaithersburg man detained in an Aruban jail for his alleged involvement in the disappearance of his traveling companion says his son told him conditions in the jail are “miserable.”

Frank Giordano, the father of 50-year-old Gary Giordano, told the Today Show on Tuesday that his son said he was sleeping on a concrete floor in a 100-degree cell. Gary Giordano has been in custody since Aug. 5, when he was detained on suspicions that he was involved in the disappearance of 35-year-old Robyn Gardner.

Gardner, of Frederick ,was last seen on the Caribbean island on Aug. 2. Prosecutors say they doubt Gary Giordano’s claims that she disappeared at sea while the two were snorkeling.

Frank Giordano, 80, told the Today Show that his son called his Florida home over the weekend and said he had been treated badly and was being held “without good cause.” A judge approved prosecutors’ request last week to keep him in custody for 60 more days. Gary Giordano also told his father a police car parked outside his cell blasted its horn every hour, keeping him awake.

Aruban authorities told the show that the Giordano had been given a mattress and was no longer sleeping on the floor. He is no longer in a solitary cell and is being housed with three other inmates. The officials acknowledged that the cells are hot and said there is no air conditioning.
