Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer said that he’s tired of hearing Democrats repeatedly debate healthcare when they should instead be focused on the economy in order to beat President Trump.
“We’re going to have to take Mr. Trump down on the economy because, if you listen to him, he’s crowing about it every single day and he’s going to beat us unless we can take him down on the economy, stupid,” the billionaire said during the eighth Democratic debate.
Steyer’s quote was a reference to the line Bill Clinton strategist James Carville used in the 1992 presidential campaign about focusing on the “economy, stupid.”
Later in the debate, Steyer said that “we have to take him down on the economy and get him out of the White House as soon as possible.”
“The fact that he’s incompetent as a president, his economy isn’t delivering for working people, the jobs don’t pay enough for people to live on,” Steyer said.
Trump has seen his approval rating rise in recent weeks as the economy has shown resilience. Unemployment is currently near a 50-year low and wages are gradually rising.
