Sculpture ‘Bihar’ (‘Tomorrow’ in Basque language)(R, down), by Mexican artist Ruben Orozco, is seen in a estuary in Bilbao, Basque Country, northern Spain, 22 September 2021.

Residents of Bilbao, Spain, were greeted with an unsettling surprise on Thursday when they discovered a statue in the river that appeared to be a drowning woman.

The 264-pound fiberglass figure was placed in the River Nervion by the BBK Foundation, the charitable arm of Spanish bank Kutxabank, as reported by Spanish news website Nius, according to Reuters. As tides in the river rise and fall, the statue is at times uncovered and at other times submerged — generating discussion among those who pass by.
