Michelle Obama spoke out against President Trump’s attacks on a group of minority congresswomen, saying “there’s a place for us all” in America.
“What truly makes our country great is its diversity. I’ve seen that beauty in so many ways over the years. Whether we are born here or seek refuge here, there’s a place for us all. We must remember it’s not my America or your America. It’s our America,” the former first lady tweeted Friday.

The controversy began last weekend when Trump told four Democratic women of color they should “go back” to their home countries if they are unhappy with the status of the United States, though only one of the women was born outside the U.S.
On Wednesday, a crowd at his campaign rally in North Carolina chanted “send her back” after he criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born American citizen from Minnesota.
Trump claimed Thursday he did not approve of the chant and tried to stop it, but video shows the president allowing it to go on for about 13 seconds before he carried on with his speech.
“I was not happy with it,” he told reporters at the White House. “I disagree with it.”
Trump appeared to walk back his disavowal on Friday, defending the rally attendees as “incredible patriots.”
