Donald Trump threatened to sue his “friend” Ted Cruz on Monday, saying he would initiate legal action against the Texas senator if he didn’t “take down his false ads and retract his lies.”
“If Ted is going to continue to lie with such desperation, I have no choice but to fight back,” Trump wrote in a Facebook post of grievances. “One of the ways I can fight back is to bring a lawsuit against him relative to the fact that he was born in Canada and therefore cannot be President. If he doesn’t take down his false ads and retract his lies, I will do so immediately.”
Trump added this warning to the Republican National Committee: “Additionally, the RNC should intervene and if they don’t they are in default of their pledge to me.”
His comments echo those he made earlier in Mount Pleasant, S.C., The State reports:
Trump’s specific complaints included Cruz’s questioning of the types of judges he would appoint and Cruz’s attacks against his position on abortion. The Republican frontrunner defended himself by listing William Pryor and Diane Sykes, two federal judges appointed by President George W. Bush, as qualified replacements for the late Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. He also said he is “staunchly pro-life and [has] been for a long time,” explaining that he’s evolved “on many issues,” not unlike Ronald Reagan.
Such evolution would had to have occurred since October 1999, when Trump told Meet the Press that he was “pro-choice in every respect.” And on the issue of judicial appointments, Trump didn’t answer THE WEEKLY STANDARD’s John McCormack this month when he was asked if he’d appoint a judge who disagreed with his position on eminent domain.
