Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions thinks President Obama and Attorney General Loretta Lynch should publicly condemn the violent protests that occurred outside of Donald Trump’s campaign rally Tuesday night in Albuquerque, N.M.
“I just can’t imagine this kind of reaction and I hope it will be condemned by President Obama, Attorney General Lynch and Hillary Clinton,” Sessions, who’s been a close ally to the Trump campaign, told radio host Laura Ingraham Wednesday morning.
“They should condemn this,” the Republican repeated. “People had a peaceful assembly [and] we cannot allow this kind of violence to intimidate us from discussing important issues.”
Trump supporters leaving his rally Tuesday evening were greeted by dozens of protesters who threw rocks at them and were lighting fires in the streets.
According to several reports, the protesters broke a glass door at the convention center where the presumptive Republican nominee spoke and were jumping on police vehicles while chanting expletives about Trump.
One arrest was made and several law enforcement officers were injured, according to Fox News.
“Appears that most of the [anti-Trump] protesters have left & remaining contingent is only looking to cause trouble & be destructive,” the Albuquerque Police Department tweeted late Tuesday night.
Obama has previously criticized anti-Trump protesters for their “misguided attempts to shut down” free speech.
“However offensive it may be, we live in a country where free speech is one of the most important rights that we hold,” he said in March.
