No more ‘beauty contest’: Monopoly ditching longtime Community Chest cards

Hasbro announced Friday it will update 16 Monopoly board game “Community Chest” cards to reflect a more contemporary view of the term “community.”

The company said the changes will be the first made to the property trading game in at least 85 years and will ditch prompts such as winning a “beauty contest” or winning “life insurance,” according to a readout posted online.

“The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name … and clearly today community is more important than ever,” said Eric Nyman, who is the chief consumer officer at Hasbro.

Instead, the game will now offer scenarios such as rewards for visiting an elderly neighbor, buying cookies from a bake sale, and donating blood.

Hasbro said part of its initiative to change the game’s cards will be inspired by community votes, encouraging fans to visit MonopolyCommunityChest.com to vote on new card ideas. Submissions will be accepted through April 9.

“We felt like 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what community means to them through voting on new Community Chest Cards. We’re really excited to see what new cards get voted in!” Nyman said.

The company noted “the tumultuous year of 2020” inspired the changes to work toward making the term “community” have a whole new meaning.

Changes to the famous Monopoly game come after Hasbro recently announced it would alter the brand name and logo for its line of Mr. Potato Head figures to be called Potato Head, though the Mr. Potato Head and Mrs. Potato Head products themselves aren’t going anywhere.
