ORIGINAL POST: Authorities are still investigating the cause of a fire that killed a young boy in Southeast D.C. on Friday evening.

The blaze broke out at the two-story duplex on the 3100 block of Buena Vista Terrace at about 6:15 p.m. A boy, who was about 5 years old, was killed. Deputy fire chief Ken Crosswhite said officials were trying to verify the boy’s age.

Two women, ages 55 and 29, a 13-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were taken to a hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. Their conditions weren’t available Saturday afternoon.

A firefighter was hospitalized in serious condition after receiving burns, but was released Saturday morning, Crosswhite said.

He said investigators don’t know where the fire began or how it started.
