‘Not worth it for us’: Uber drivers to get some help as customers pay fuel fee

Uber announced it will begin charging customers a fuel fee as gas prices rise across the United States in an effort to “try and keep earnings consistent.”

Customers will pay a temporary surcharge of either $0.45 or $0.55 for Uber rides and a surcharge of either $0.35 or $0.45 for Uber Eats beginning Wednesday. The surcharge amount will depend on location and trip distance.

Uber driver Fadi Haddid said that the rising gas prices are hitting him the hardest since he began driving five years ago.

“It’s not worth it for us,” Haddid told KCRA. “Because we pay for the gas, for the tires, for the miles, for everything.”

Uber announced the fuel fee Friday, telling drivers that it would initially last for 60 days in hopes that it would reduce the impact of rising gas prices.

“We know that you’ve felt the sting of record-high gas prices, which has affected how much you’re able to earn on Uber,” Liza Winship, Uber’s head of driver operations in the U.S. and Canada, said in a statement.
