Trump celebrates Supreme Court decision to reinstate travel ban

President Trump celebrated Monday the Supreme Court’s decision that allows a limited version of his travel ban to go into effect while the high court rules on its legality.

“Today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision is a clear victory for our national security,” Trump said in a statement. “It allows the travel suspension for the six terror-prone countries and the refugee suspension to become largely effective.”

The Supreme Court’s actions on Monday allow the administration to begin blocking people from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

Trump’s revised executive order stops people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the country for 90 days. The court said Monday the administration could begin blocking people who don’t have relationships with U.S. citizens.

“As president, I cannot allow people into our country who want to do us harm,” Trump said. “I want people who can love the United States and all of its citizens, and who will be hardworking and productive.”

Trump first signed a travel ban executive order on Jan. 27 but lower courts blocked its implementation. The administration then issued a revised travel ban in March.

“My number one responsibility as commander in chief is to keep the American people safe,” the president said in his statement. “Today’s ruling allows me to use an important tool for protecting our nation’s homeland. I am also particularly gratified that the Supreme Court’s decision was 9-0.”
