Bill de Blasio puts potential end date on his 2020 campaign

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio could end his 2020 presidential campaign by Oct. 1.

The candidate said Wednesday there would be little reason to continue his long shot bid for the White House if he failed to qualify for the fourth Democratic debate in October.

“I think the logical thing to say is I’m going to go and try and make the October debates and if I can, that’s a good reason to keep going forward, and if I can’t, I think it’s really tough to conceive of continuing,” de Blasio said, according to the New York Times.

De Blasio did not make the third debate, happening next week, after qualifying for the first two this summer.

Candidates need to meet polling and campaign contribution thresholds determined by the Democratic National Committee by Oct. 1 to make that month’s debate. The criteria are: 130,000 unique donors, with 400 donors per state in at least 20 states, and at least 2% support in four national polls or in the first four states to hold their primaries or caucuses.

The Sept. 12 debate had the same requirements.

De Blasio, 58, has struggled to gain traction in the polls, having less than 1% support, according to a RealClearPolitics average of national data.
