Paul Ryan warns that Democrats plan to ‘paralyze Washington and drown the White House’

Outgoing Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has a last-minute message for voters ahead of the midterm elections: Democrats will “suffocate Washington”, undo recent Republican victories, and prevent President Trump doing his job by miring him in investigations.

“Democrats have made it clear they want to repeal tax reform and hike taxes across the board on hardworking Americans to pay for their new spending,” Ryan writes in today’s Washington Examiner. “They want to paralyze Washington and drown the White House in frivolous subpoenas and investigations, ignoring the problems that their constituents face.”

Ryan notes that under Republican leadership, the House has passed more than 1,000 pieces of legislation and said, “it’s important that Republicans are given the chance to build on this success, keep the economy strong, and expand opportunity for even more Americans.”

“Republicans have delivered on our promises, and today we have a more confident and prosperous America,” Ryan writes. “Democrats, on the other hand, are promising to roll back this progress and suffocate Washington in chaos and dysfunction.”

Ryan points to a series of Republican results, including the military pay raise included in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019, a simplification of the tax code included in The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was passed in December 2017, and the low unemployment rate, among other things.

“The military is stronger today. Opportunities are more prevalent,” writes Ryan, who is not seeking re-election. “Even with all of those accomplishments, we have more we can do to make things better for millions of Americans, and we’re asking you for that chance on Tuesday.”

The 2018 midterm elections will be held on Nov. 6, and Democrats must pick up at least 23 seats currently held by Republicans to win a majority in the House. A total of 218 seats are needed by one party to obtain a majority.
