Independent Sen. Angus King endorses Hillary Clinton

Independent Sen. Angus King said he decided to vote for Hillary Clinton after taking a ride on one of America’s “Doomsday planes.”

The Maine senator told CNN his visit to the National Airborne Operations Center, and his trip on a Doomsday plane amid a nuclear attack exercise, led him to conclude he must vote for Clinton. The Doomsday planes exist so that the nation’s military and civilian leadership can function amid a nuclear attack.

“I got to vote for Hillary Clinton,” King told CNN. “I just can’t in good conscience put somebody in that airplane who’s coolness and sort of patience and judgement I have doubts about.”

In contrast, King said Clinton’s testimony before the House Select Committee on Benghazi was an “amazing performance” that showed she was ready for primetime.

The independent senator caucuses with Democrats, so his decision does not come as a shock. But as new polling shows Clinton trailing Trump with independents nationwide, his support could benefit her campaign.
