Rubio says it’s ‘arrogant’ to impeach Trump to keep him from running again: ‘Voters get to decide that’

GOP Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said it is “arrogant” to say former President Donald Trump should be impeached by the Senate so he can’t run again.

Rubio joined Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday and was asked if “it would be useful …to ban [Trump] from seeking public office again.”

“I think that’s an arrogant statement for anyone to make. Voters get to decide that. Who are we to tell voters who they can vote for in the future?” Rubio responded.

During the same interview, Rubio said that Trump “bears responsibility for some of” the rioting that took place in the Capitol on Jan. 6, but said that impeaching him in the Senate is “a bad idea.”

“The first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I will do it, because I think it’s really bad for America,” he said.

“It’s gonna take us, not just is going to keep us from focusing on important things, but it’s also just going to stir it up even more and make it even harder to get things done moving forward,” he said.

He added that the impeachment trial is “counterproductive” and will “continue to fuel these divisions that have paralyzed the country.”

Trump’s second impeachment trial is slated to begin on Feb. 9.
