Anne Arundel officer shot in Baltimore’s Brooklyn neighborhood

An Anne Arundel County Police officer is in critical condition after being shot by a suspect in Brooklyn.

Police said the unnamed officer responded to a report of a stolen car being ransacked by an unspecified number of suspects in the 400 block of Audrey Avenue near the county-Baltimore City line shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. John Gilmer, spokesman for the Anne Arundel police.

When police arrived, the suspects fled, but the officer caught up to one of them. As the officer was interviewing the suspect, the man struggled with the officer. Another officer tried to use a Taser, but it is unclear if the non-lethal device was effective, Gilmer said.

During the struggle the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the officer in the torso, Gilmer said. The officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

He was taken to University of Maryland ? Shock Trauma with non-life threatening injuries. The man who shot the officer was placed into custody.

County and Baltimore City police officers canvassed the neighborhood this morning looking for clues and suspects.

Several Brooklyn residents ? none of whom gave their names – said the neighborhood has been troubled by an open-air drug market, numerous robberies, shootings and stabbings.
