Michigan hospital opens greenhouse, hires farmer

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A suburban Detroit hospital has hired a farmer to grow organic produce for patients in its greenhouse.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is expected Thursday morning to announce the greenhouse’s opening and says it is projected to reduce food costs while providing patients with healthy meals.

The greenhouse was built with philanthropic funds. Crops are growing in water instead of soil to maximize the diversity of produce and maintain space for patients, staff and visitors.

Resident farmer Michelle Lutz has more than 16 years of growing experience and once co-owned a certified organic vegetable farm in Yale.
