Sen. John Cornyn is posing the question: Is President Joe Biden “really in charge?”
The Texas Republican quoted from a Politico report that explored how Biden is taking a more hands-off approach to his presidency, leaving more public-facing responsibilities to his Cabinet.
“The president is not doing cable news interviews. Tweets from his account are limited and, when they come, unimaginably conventional,” the article says. “The public comments are largely scripted. Biden has opted for fewer sit down interviews with mainstream outlets and reporters.”

In response to the excerpt, which the senator did not put in quotation marks, Cornyn tweeted, “Invites the question: is [Biden] really in charge?”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki dismissed the tweet as a conspiracy theory.
“I can confirm that the President of the United States does not spend his time tweeting conspiracy theories. He spends his time working on behalf of the American people,” she said during a press conference on Monday.
Critics in conservative media and some Republicans have long questioned the physical and mental health of Biden, who became the oldest person to be sworn in as president. He is 78.
Last month, Ronny Jackson, a representative for Texas’s 13th Congressional District who previously served as a presidential physician, questioned Biden’s fitness for office.
“I served as White House physician under THREE Presidents. I’ve seen what it takes physically AND mentally to do the job. I can tell you right now that the way Biden is hiding from the public is a MAJOR red flag. Something’s not right!” he tweeted on March 21.
The president has suffered several stumbles during his first few months in office. Biden attracted scrutiny after he was captured on video tripping multiple times as he scaled the steps leading up to Air Force One on March 19, months after he fractured his foot. His fall near Air Force One was one day after he mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “president.”
White House communications director Kate Bedingfield said the president was “just fine and did not even require any attention from the medical team who travels with him” after the Air Force One stumble.

Despite a vow that his administration would be marked by “transparency,” Biden waited 64 days after assuming office to hold his first solo press conference, a record among recent presidents.
Cornyn, who was Senate majority whip from 2015 to 2019, handily won reelection to a fourth term in the U.S. Senate in 2020, defeating challenger MJ Hegar by nearly 10 points.
