A Politico/Morning Consult poll found 48 percent of voters said it would be inappropriate if President Trump fired Robert Mueller, the man picked to be the special counsel investigating possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The poll reported 22 percent of voters said they believe it would be appropriate for Trump to fire Mueller, while 30 percent said they didn’t know or had no opinion.
The poll also found 21 percent of those polled said they somewhat approved of how Mueller was handling his job as special counsel, and 19 percent said they strongly approved. Thirteen percent said they somewhat disapproved, and 14 percent said they strongly disapproved. Thirty-three percent of respondents said they didn’t know or had no opinion.
The Department of Justice appointed Mueller, a former FBI director under President George W. Bush, to lead a special counsel to look into alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign during the 2016 election and Russia. Mueller’s appointment as special counsel came after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey in May.
Trump has expressed his frustrations with the investigation, calling it a “witch hunt,” and there has been speculation that he might fire Mueller.
The poll was conducted from July 20-24 and surveyed 3,981 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 2 percent.
