Tom Brady announces retirement after days of side-stepping rumors

Football star Tom Brady announced his retirement Tuesday morning after spending several days denying rumors that he was leaving the sport.

Brady, 44, announced on social media that he no longer wants to make a “100% competitive commitment” to the sport and will pursue other business ventures and time with his family.

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady said. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it’s time for me to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”


He continued on his Instagram to thank those who supported him during the last few years of his career, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers community, friends, and his wife and children.

The 22-season veteran spent the weekend countering claims from ESPN that he was handing in his helmet, including during a Monday night interview in which he said, “When the time is right, I’ll be ready to make a decision one way or another.”

Brady won six Super Bowls and became one of the most successful players in the NFL during his 19 years with the New England Patriots. He spent his last two seasons with the Buccaneers, leading them to his seventh and final Super Bowl win in 2021. His last game was a loss to the Los Angeles Rams in this year’s playoffs.
