Board chairman John Erickson resigned at a morning board meeting, with the board selecting Michael Busch, also speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, to replace him.
“I have been considering leaving the Board for several months and I have been consulting with other Board members and elected officials during this time,” Erickson said in a statement. “Governor O’Malley and I, through a series of conversations, mutually decided that a change in the leadership was in the best interests of UMMS and the University of Maryland Medical School.”
An Erickson spokeswoman said he would not be available for further comment.
The board Wednesday voted Robert Chrencik interim president and CEO. Former CEO Edmond Notebaert resigned Aug. 1.
Busch said the board would form a search committee to find a permanent president and CEO, and he would not retain chairmanship of the board.
“Our board of directors is grateful to John Erickson for his commitment to advancing our institution,” Busch said in a statement. “It is my intention to serve in this capacity only until a permanent board chair has been selected.”
Chrencik has been executive vice-president and chief financial officer of the medical system since 1999. Erickson heads Catonsville-based Erickson Retirement Communities.
The University of Maryland Medical System oversees the university’s medical school in downtown Baltimore as well as six greater Baltimore and two Eastern Shore medical systems.
