Study: Md., Va. among best in health emergency preparedness

Maryland and Virginia were among the top-ranking states in preparedness for a health emergency, according to a study conducted by two national nonprofits that examined 10 key factors of emergency preparedness.

The District ranked in the middle of the pack.

Released Tuesday, the eighth annual “Ready or Not? Protecting the Public from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism” report considered categories such as funding commitment, incident response and disease detection and reporting. States received a point for each category met.

Maryland and Virginia were among the 11 that received a score of nine. Eighteen states received an eight, and seven states and the District scored a seven. Three states received a perfect 10, with no state scoring lower than a five.

Released by the Trust for America’s Heath and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the report also outlined a state-by-state analysis of emergency preparedness over the past decade.
