DNC leader Tom Perez: ‘I’m not talking impeachment’ for Trump

Democratic National Committee leader Tom Perez doesn’t think the time is right to be pressing the impeachment of President Trump as some big donors in his party want.

Perez said on ABC’s “This Week” that environmentalist billionaire Tom Steyer is allowed to spend his money how he pleases, but his effort to impeach Trump isn’t a focus for the DNC right now.

“Tom Steyer has the right to do whatever he wants to do. He invested a lot of money in Virginia. I applaud his efforts in investing in organizing and helping to elect Democrats,” he said.

“A number of people are very, myself included, are very, very concerned about the culture of corruption that has engulfed Washington, D.C. I’m not talking about impeachment. I’m talking about good jobs for folks. I’m talking about healthcare for all. I’m talking about making sure that we’re fighting for the issues that matter.”

Steyer’s ad pressing impeachment for Trump has been ubiquitous on cable news stations around the country in recent weeks, even getting pulled from Fox News after viewer complaints.

However, Democratic leaders continue to say impeachment is not on their radar. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi continues to shoot down questions on whether the Democrats would try to impeach Trump if they retake the House in 2018.

Perez refused to spend much time talking about it Sunday.

“I’ve been fighting for access to good jobs, healthcare,” he said. “The culture of corruption around Washington, D.C., is very real, not just the Russians.”
