The State Department indicated Friday that it supports the British Labor Party’s recent suspensions of some of its members for alleged anti-Semitism.
Among the suspended are former London mayor Ken Livingstone, and Muslim lawmaker Naz Shah. Critics of the suspensions argue that criticisms of Israel’s actions aren’t necessarily anti-Semitic.
“We categorically deplore and condemn anti-Semitism and racism in any and all of its forms,” State spokesman Mark Toner said Friday.
“We were glad to hear, frankly, that Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn did state definitively that his party will not tolerate anti-Semitism,” Toner said. “We condemn those kinds of remarks [of the suspended lawmakers],” Toner said.
