Russian President Vladimir Putin joked about Russia’s interference in U.S. elections when discussing if his country would meddle again in 2020.
Putin, who was attending an energy forum in Moscow Wednesday, was asked for his thoughts about former special counsel Robert Mueller’s prediction that Russia would interfere in the 2020 elections like it did in the 2016 presidential election.
“I’ll tell you in a secret, yes, we’ll definitely intervene,” the Russian leader said into the microphone as he covered his mouth with his hand.
“It’s a secret so that everybody can laugh and so we’ll go big. But don’t tell anyone, please,” Putin, 66, added.
Attendees at the event laughed and some clapped at the sarcastic response.
During his July testimony before Congress, Mueller said that he believed that Russia would again intervene in the upcoming elections. He also warned that other countries might try to duplicate what Russia did in 2016 in future elections.
