Rep. Tom Price declined on Wednesday to promise that he wouldn’t cut any dollars from Medicare or Medicaid, and instead argued that dollars aren’t the right metric for measuring the entitlement programs.
“I believe the metric ought to be the care that the patients are receiving,” the Georgia House lawmaker said during his confirmation hearing to be health and human services secretary at the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
He gave that answer after Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., asked Price whether he can guarantee that he will safeguard President-elect Trump’s promise to not cut Medicare or Medicaid. Warren also pushed back by saying the metric she is looking for is money as President-elect Trump said he would not cut one dollar for the programs.
“You might want to print out President-elect Trump’s statement … and post that into your new office,” she added.
