A Democratic senator insisted Wednesday that the reopened investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private emails “will amount to nothing.”
“I’m confident that this will amount to nothing,” said Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., on CNN.
He said that because FBI Director James Comey has not completed the investigation into the new stash of emails, people can’t claim that they know something explosive has been found. He said the emails could be duplicates, unrelated to Hillary Clinton, or may consist of personal correspondence.
“We really don’t know much about it and apparently neither does Director Comey,” he said. The Justice Department has said it would work quickly to learn more about what might be in the hundreds of thousands of emails that were found on a laptop owned by top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, and her estranged husband, former Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y.
Coons suggested that voters will make their decision about which presidential candidate to support based on the issues facing the country, rather than the most recent revelation in the Clinton email server saga.
“Ultimately voters who are going to the polls today this week and up to next Tuesday will be making up their minds on which of these candidates has a stronger vision for our future,” he said.
