Trump responds to refugee ban critics: The ‘citizens of this country are my total priority’

President Trump on Friday responded to the criticism over his executive action to temporarily suspend immigration from seven countries in the Middle East and North Africa by saying his actions were done out of concern for the more than 300 million constituents in the U.S., not the world’s population.

“On every single front, we are working to deliver for American workers and American families. You, the law-abiding citizens of this country, are my total priority. Your safety, your jobs and your wages guide our decisions,” Trump said in his weekly address, released Friday. “We are here to serve you, the great and loyal citizens of the United States of America.”

Trump said he signed the order to keep terrorists out of the country.

The 45th president’s address is his second since being sworn-in two weeks ago. His communications team released the video on Facebook Friday video, breaking tradition of holding the address for release until early Saturday morning.

Unlike the addresses of prior presidents that focused solely on one topic, Trump used his to review the entire week. Trump discussed his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, Friday’s employment report, Black History month and the funeral for William “Ryan” Owens, the Navy SEAL killed in Yemen.

While touting the work of the administration, Trump added “there is still much work to do. That I can tell you.”
