A top aide for Mayor Shelia Dixon has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Baltimore County Police.
Anthony McCarthy, communications director for Dixon, was suspended by the mayor Monday evening.
“I was shocked and disappointed to learn of the allegations currently being investigated by the Baltimore County Police Department. Mr. McCarthy was immediately placed on administrative leave. I trust Baltimore County to conduct a thorough and fair investigation of this matter,” Dixon wrote in a statement.
McCarthy joined the Dixon administration in February after he worked for her when she was city council president from 2003-2004. In 2006, McCarthy ran for state delegate and lost. He has also worked as a radio host for WYPR (88.1 FM), a local affiliate of National Public Radio.
Dixon spokesman Sterling Clifford would not comment on any possible charges against McCarthy.
“No charges have been filed yet, it’s all still under investigation,” Clifford said.
