A World War II veteran got a big surprise over the weekend when he received over 1,000 cards wishing him “Happy birthday!”
Orland Phillips of Virginia celebrated his 103rd birthday on Saturday, and Mary Phillips, his daughter, shocked him with more than 1,000 cards from at least 45 states, according to a report.
The daughter of the former serviceman said the original idea would be for her father to get 103 cards on his birthday, the report noted.

She posted the request on social media asking for the cards for Orland, and it went viral, receiving over 500 shares.
“After this has happened, any time, we see anybody that is older, we will definitely send them a card. We have seen requests before, and this means so much that we will definitely do that in the future,” according to Mary.
Phillips served as an Army machinist on the Pacific front during World War II, and many of the cards thank Orland for his service.
The veteran is grateful for every card he has gotten, and he said he reads every one.

“I don’t know what to think about all that many cards. I have been working on reading them. I read every one of them,” Orland said.
