The Virginia teacher reportedly shot by a six-year-old student has been identified as Abigail Zwerner.
Zwerner, who teaches first grade in Newport News, Virginia, was identified through a posting on the Rickneck Elementary School website. She is currently in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Ms. Zwerner, who sustained serious injuries,” the school wrote. “We were happy to learn today that she is in stable condition, and is talking with family and friends.”
Newport News police responded to reports of a shooting at 2 p.m. Only one shot was fired and the identity of the student has not been released, although the student is a boy, according to police. The shooting was not accidental, per police.

It is unclear how the boy obtained the gun or how the legal system will handle the case, given his age.
A news conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Monday.
