UPDATE, 6 P.M.: Federal Center SW Metro station has reopened.
Metro officials have shut down the Federal Center SW station while police investigate a suspicious package.
Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said the package is on the sidewalk just outside the station, and the station will remain closed while Metro Transit Police assist U.S. Capitol Police with their investigation.
The situation arose around 4 p.m., and Farbstein said passengers hoping to board trains at Federal Center SW have access to free shuttle buses. Orange and Blue Line trains are passing through the station, but are not stopping.
