Take 5 for April 13 to 15

Comics United Benefit Show for Joe Deeley at the DC Improv, Sunday In early March, local comedian Joe Deeley suffered a stroke, and the D.C.-area comic community has sprung into action.

On Sunday, the DC Improv is holding a fundraiser to help with Deeley’s medical bills. Deeley is rehabbing from the stroke, but is without health insurance.

Riot Act Comedy Theater also held a Deeley fundraiser last month.

“When I put out the word, literally every comic in town emailed me,” said Ryan Conner, who is hosting and organizing the event.

Conner met Deeley nine years ago at an open mic in Tysons Corner. Deeley became known in the local comedy scene as the guy who recorded performances and gave copies to rising comics. In the day before everyone had some sort of iPhone-like device, such recordings helped up-and-comers promote or refine their routines.

With prohibitive costs, comics frequently forgo health insurance.

“It’s a huge problem,” Conner said. “Most don’t have it.”

On Sunday, more than 10 comics are scheduled to appear. All for Deeley.

“It’s important to me to lend anyone a hand,” Conner said of why this is something he wanted to do. “With Joe, he’s really the nicest guy I’ve met. He’s been so good to every comic.”
