Green sky lit by Chinese squid boats spooks Taiwanese

An eerie, green sky at night has Taiwan’s residents spooked.

The otherworldly glow, seen from the Matsu islands, comes from a wave of Chinese boats where fishermen use green LED lights to attract squid near the unofficial buffer known as the median line between Taiwan and China. The unusual light show not only left many Taiwanese officials and residents uncomfortable, but they also claimed it threatens tourism and marine life, according to the Washington Post.

WHY THE NEXT DECADE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR CHINA AND THE UNITED STATES

“There are at least hundreds of [Chinese] squid boats,” Lai Wen-Chi told the outlet. “It used to be just one or two dots of green, but now you see a complete line of green.”

Locals also accuse the Chinese fishing boats of sneaking into Taiwan waters, leaving nets and cages that deplete fish stocks. Taiwan recovered more than eight tons of Chinese traps between April and September, Lai said.

Additionally, Chinese dredging ships are scooping up sand near Matsu for Chinese construction projects.

This comes as tensions between Taiwan and China continue to rise, especially in recent days. Chinese warplanes harried Taiwan’s air defense zone in the lead-up to National Day celebrations in both capitals. Beijing views Taiwan as an illegitimate breakaway island part of its own territory, and the recent saber-rattling alarmed President Joe Biden’s administration and lawmakers.

After Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen hailed her government’s growing relationship with key democratic powers and struck a defiant tone against Beijing in her National Day speech, Chinese officials accused her of promoting a “two-state theory” of relations between Beijing and Taipei.
