Gov. Chris Christie said on Tuesday that President Trump doesn’t owe him anything for supporting him during the 2016 campaign, after initially being primary rivals.
“The president doesn’t owe me anything. He’s the president of the United States and he’s been my friend for 15 years,” Christie said on MSNBC.
Not only did the Republican New Jersey governor become a strong supporter of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, but he also led Trump’s transition team until he was replaced by Vice President Mike Pence in November. ChristIe did not get a position in Trump’s Cabinet, as was speculated for a time, but is currently leading Trump’s commission to fight opioid addiction.
Christie was asked what he owes the president and whether he thought his loyalty was returned.
“I only owe him the truth. Which is exactly what I was saying to the last two segments. I owe him the truth and we have a friendship that well predates both our political careers,” Christie said.
“So I think I understand him a lot better than most people do. So I have a great relationship with the president. And I don’t feel like he owes me a thing.”
