Little Lien on the Prairie

The Detroit Free Press is reporting:

Actress Melissa Gilbert, the “Little House on the Prairie” star who this week announced her candidacy for a Michigan congressional seat next year, expects to pay off more than $470,000 in federal and state tax liens by 2024, her campaign told the Free Press on Tuesday.

Gilbert is challenging Republican freshman Rep. Mike Bishop in Michigan’s eighth district. This is Glibert’s first run for office, though she previously served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, a post once held by Ronald Reagan.

While she’s primarily known for playing the role of Laura Ingalls Wilder in the hit television show “Little House on the Prarie” she has played many supporting roles in TV shows and TV movies, according to her IMDB page. She also suffered a concussion on season 14 of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Her campaign tells the Free Press:

“Melissa was caught in a perfect storm of financial difficulty, which is why she initiated an honest conversation with the IRS…Together they set up a payment plan that will allow her to pay back her federal taxes over approximately 8 1/2 years and her California taxes over approximately 46 months.”

The liens were filed by the IRS and the state of California, where she was born and lived much of her life. In 2013, she re-married, settling with new husband, actor, and Michigan native Timothy Busfield, who people might recall starred as the annoying brother-in-law in “Field of Dreams.”

Gilbert is running as a Democrat.
