Pa. Dem Senate candidate: Wasserman Schultz resignation ‘right step’

PHILADELPHIA — Katie McGinty, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Pennsylvania, backed Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s decision to resign her post at the end of this week’s convention

Asked about Wasserman Schultz’s decision to resign in the wake of the outgoing DNC chair getting booed by Sanders supporters at the Florida delegation’s breakfast on Monday morning, McGinty said that Wasserman Schutlz was taking the “right step” by stepping down. McGinty made the remarks to reporters during a gaggle after the Pennsylvania delegation in Center City.

“I think that Congresswoman Schultz took the right step in announcing that she would step down as chair. The DNC has an organization that has put forward an effort to be … impartial in this primary season and it was important to stay with that. But I do think we are wrestling with it. She’s wrestling with it.

McGinty also added that it was a good move because it is “time that we come together” as the convention kicks off amid renewed chaos.

Wasserman Schultz made the announcement of her impending resignation Sunday evening after it emerged that she would not be addressing the convention after Wikileaks released a trove of emails showing her and other party leaders disparaging Sen. Bernie Sanders and his campaign.

In the emails, a staffer at the DNC floated the possibility of questioning Sanders’ religion, with Wasserman Schultz at one point calling campaign manager Jeff Weaver an “ass.”
