Most Americans think Trump is racist: Poll

More than half of Americans say President Trump is a racist and think his policies have made things worse for Hispanics and Muslims. Almost half of African Americans say Trump has made things worse for them, according to a new poll.

Fifty-seven percent of American adults said they think Trump is racist in a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released Thursday. More than 8 in 10 blacks, three-quarters of Hispanics and nearly half of whites said they hold such views of Trump.

A considerably larger amount of Democrats (85 percent) than Republicans (21 percent) think Trump is racist.

Trump has denied he is racist, at one point telling reporters, “I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed. That I can tell you.”

The poll found 57 percent of Americans think Trump’s policies are bad for Muslims, 56 percent think they’ve been bad for Hispanics, and 47 percent think they’ve been bad for African Americans.

Trump has often touted the unemployment rates for African Americans and Hispanics during his presidency. He has also sparked controversy over his proposed border wall along the Mexican border and his comments about “shithole countries.”

The poll was conducted Feb. 15-19 and surveyed 1,337 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
